Privacy Policy

Personal data (usually referred to just as "data" below) will only be processed by us to the extent necessary and for the purpose of providing a functional and user-friendly website, including its contents, and the services offered there.

Per Art. 4 No. 1 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679, i.e. the General Data Protection Regulation (hereinafter referred to as the "GDPR"), "processing" refers to any operation or set of operations such as collection, recording, organization, structuring, storage, adaptation, alteration, retrieval, consultation, use, disclosure by transmission, dissemination, or otherwise making available, alignment, or combination, restriction, erasure, or destruction performed on personal data, whether by automated means or not.

The following privacy policy is intended to inform you in particular about the type, scope, purpose, duration, and legal basis for the processing of such data either under our own control or in conjunction with others. We also inform you below about the third-party components we use to optimize our website and improve the user experience which may result in said third parties also processing data they collect and control.

II. The rights of users and data subjects

With regard to the data processing to be described in more detail below, users and data subjects have the right

  • to confirmation of whether data concerning them is being processed, information about the data being processed, further information about the nature of the data processing, and copies of the data (cf. also Art. 15 GDPR);

  • to correct or complete incorrect or incomplete data (cf. also Art. 16 GDPR);

  • to the immediate deletion of data concerning them (cf. also Art. 17 DSGVO), or, alternatively, if further processing is necessary as stipulated in Art. 17 Para. 3 GDPR, to restrict said processing per Art. 18 GDPR;

  • to receive copies of the data concerning them and/or provided by them and to have the same transmitted to other providers/controllers (cf. also Art. 20 GDPR);

  • to file complaints with the supervisory authority if they believe that data concerning them is being processed by the controller in breach of data protection provisions (see also Art. 77 GDPR).

In addition, the controller is obliged to inform all recipients to whom it discloses data of any such corrections, deletions, or restrictions placed on processing the same per Art. 16, 17 Para. 1, 18 GDPR. However, this obligation does not apply if such notification is impossible or involves a disproportionate effort. Nevertheless, users have a right to information about these recipients.

Likewise, under Art. 21 GDPR, users and data subjects have the right to object to the controller's future processing of their data pursuant to Art. 6 Para. 1 lit. f) GDPR. In particular, an objection to data processing for the purpose of direct advertising is permissible.

III. Information about the data processing

Your data processed when using our website will be deleted or blocked as soon as the purpose for its storage ceases to apply, provided the deletion of the same is not in breach of any statutory storage obligations or unless otherwise stipulated below.

Server data

For technical reasons, the following data sent by your internet browser to us or to our server provider will be collected, especially to ensure a secure and stable website: These server log files record the type and version of your browser, operating system, the website from which you came (referrer URL), the webpages on our site visited, the date and time of your visit, as well as the IP address from which you visited our site.

The data thus collected will be temporarily stored, but not in association with any other of your data.

The basis for this storage is Art. 6 Para. 1 lit. f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest lies in the improvement, stability, functionality, and security of our website.

The data will be deleted within no more than seven days, unless continued storage is required for evidentiary purposes. In which case, all or part of the data will be excluded from deletion until the investigation of the relevant incident is finally resolved.

    The legal basis for such processing is Art. 6 Para. 1 lit. b) GDPR, insofar as these cookies are used to collect data to initiate or process contractual relationships.

    If the processing does not serve to initiate or process a contract, our legitimate interest lies in improving the functionality of our website. The legal basis is then Art. 6 Para. 1 lit. f) GDPR.

    When you close your browser, these session cookies are deleted.

If you register for our free newsletter, the data requested from you for this purpose, i.e. your email address and, optionally, your name and address, will be sent to us. We also store the IP address of your computer and the date and time of your registration. During the registration process, we will obtain your consent to receive this newsletter and the type of content it will offer, with reference made to this privacy policy. The data collected will be used exclusively to send the newsletter and will not be passed on to third parties.

The legal basis for this is Art. 6 Para. 1 lit. a) GDPR.

You may revoke your prior consent to receive this newsletter under Art. 7 Para. 3 GDPR with future effect. All you have to do is inform us that you are revoking your consent or click on the unsubscribe link contained in each newsletter.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics on our website. This is a web analytics service provided by Google Inc., Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Irland (hereinafter: Google).

Through certification according to the EU-US Privacy Shield

Google guarantees that it will follow the EU's data protection regulations when processing data in the United States.

The Google Analytics service is used to analyze how our website is used. The legal basis is Art. 6 Para. 1 lit. f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest lies in the analysis, optimization, and economic operation of our site.

Usage and user-related information, such as IP address, place, time, or frequency of your visits to our website will be transmitted to a Google server in the United States and stored there. However, we use Google Analytics with the so-called anonymization function, whereby Google truncates the IP address within the EU or the EEA before it is transmitted to the US.

The data collected in this way is in turn used by Google to provide us with an evaluation of visits to our website and what visitors do once there. This data can also be used to provide other services related to the use of our website and of the internet in general.

Google states that it will not connect your IP address to other data. In addition, Google provides further information with regard to its data protection practices at including options you can exercise to prevent such use of your data.

In addition, Google offers an opt-out add-on at in addition with further information. This add-on can be installed on the most popular browsers and offers you further control over the data that Google collects when you visit our website. The add-on informs Google Analytics' JavaScript (ga.js) that no information about the website visit should be transmitted to Google Analytics. However, this does not prevent information from being transmitted to us or to other web analytics services we may use as detailed herein.

Google Fonts

Our website uses Google Fonts to display external fonts. This is a service provided by Google Inc., Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Irland (hereinafter: Google).

To enable the display of certain fonts on our website, a connection to the Google server in the USA is established whenever our website is accessed.

The legal basis is Art. 6 Para. 1 lit. f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest lies in the optimization and economic operation of our site.

When you access our site, a connection to Google is established from which Google can identify the site from which your request has been sent and to which IP address the fonts are being transmitted for display.

Declaration of Consent

I. Data Use and Security

The collection of personal data solely includes your e-mail address. We will save and use your e-mail address to send you the download link of the study app and - based on your preference - to send you daily reminders of the daily exercises via e-mail. At the end of the study, we will use your e-mail address to organize the study compensation. Six months after study completion, we will delete your email address. All study data which is assessed by questionnaires and meta data on the Contenance app use (e.g., time stamps of login/logout) is saved using a study pseudonym (e.g., 1001). No other smartphone-related meta data is assessed.

Legal basis

The legal basis for processing your personal data is your voluntary consent in accordance with Art. 6 para. 1 lit. a DSGVO, or Art. 9 paragraph. 2 lit. a DSGVO, as far as special categories of personal data are concerned. The data protection regulations are complied with at all times. In addition, we work on the basis of the Declaration of Helsinki (Declaration of the World Medical Association on the Ethical Principles for Medical Research on Human Beings) and the Guideline for Good Clinical Practice and comply with the recommendations of the German Research Foundation (DFG) to ensure good scientific practice.

Data storage and access

All your data will be kept strictly confidential in accordance with the provisions of the „Bundesdatenschutzgesetz“. All study data will be stored in pseudonymized form and will be evaluated and published in anonymous form, i.e. without linking study data to your e-mail address. The results do not allow drawing any conclusions who provided which information. The storage time of your personal data (i.e., your e-mail address) will be 6 month. All other data will be stored for 10 years as requested by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.


The publication of the research results in publications or at conferences takes place exclusively in anonymous form in such a way that you cannot be identified as a person.

You have the following rights with regard to your personal data:

Consent to the processing of personal data and right to revoke consent

The processing of your personal data is only legal with your consent. You are not obliged to consent to the processing; the consent is voluntary. In addition, you have the right to revoke your consent to the processing of personal data at any time (as long as the data is not available in anonymous form). Refusal or revocation of your consent will not result in any legal disadvantages for you. The revocation of your consent will result in the processing of the personal data concerned becoming inadmissible for the future in accordance with the revocation declaration. This does not affect the legality of the processing carried out until the revocation.

Right of disclosure

You have the right to obtain information about the personal data concerning you which is collected, processed or, if necessary, passed on to third parties in our working group (Art. 15 DSGVO).

Right of correction

You have the right to have incorrect personal data concerning your individual corrected (Art. 16 DSGVO).

Right of deletion

Under the legal requirements, you have the right to delete personal data concerning you (Art. 17 DSGVO), e.g. if these data are no longer necessary for the purpose for which they were collected and there are no legal storage periods to prevent their deletion or you have withdrawn your consent and there is no other legal basis for the processing. Anonymised data can no longer be deleted because no connection between data and person can be established.

Right of restriction of processing

You have the right to require the controller to restrict the processing if one of the conditions of Art. 18 (1) DSGVO applies.

Right of objection

You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data.

Right of data transferability

Under the conditions of Art. 20 paragraph 1 DSGVO, you have the right to data transferability.

Right of complaint

You have the right to file a complaint with a Member State supervisory authority if there are doubts as to the legality of the processing of your personal data. The responsible regulatory authority for the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information. Irrespective of this complaint right, you can contact the Data Protection Officer of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Tel: +49 (30) 2093-20022, e-mail:, at any time if you have any questions regarding data protection law.

II. Declaration of consent

I have been informed of the purpose, meaning and scope of the planned study. I have read and understood the study website and the data use and security document. My current physical condition does not prohibit participation in the study. I have been made aware that my participation is voluntary and that I can revoke my consent to participate at any time and without giving reasons for the future. If I refuse or revoke my consent to participate, this will not result in any disadvantages for me. In the event of revocation, my personal data will be deleted in accordance with its provisions, unless statutory provisions provide otherwise (e.g. anonymization, blocking in the case of compulsory storage). If I discontinue the study before the end, I will receive the corresponding number of “Versuchspersonenmarken” for the time spent until then. I am not eligible for the lottery of the 25€ online shop vouchers, nor getting a free lifetime access to the Contenance App.

I agree that the data collected in the context of this study on my person, the self-reported data that I have filled out in the questionnaires and the data of the app use tracking will be recorded, processed and published in anonymous form on electronic data carriers, as described in the above-mentioned information. I can object to the further processing of my data until the data has been consolidated at group level. Until this time I can also demand the deletion or destruction of the data. All data will be deleted after ten years of proof as required by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and required by law. I have understood that personal data is collected for scientific studies. The disclosure, storage and evaluation of this study-related data is carried out in accordance with legal provisions and requires my voluntary consent before participation in the study.
